Scratch is a free tool for making games, stories and animations. Instead of typing code, you snap coloured blocks together, like toy bricks. It was made by a team at MIT, a university in the USA. You can use it in a web browser at scratch.mit.edu or as an app.

A stack of blocks is called a script. Scratch runs a script from the top block down to the bottom one, in order.
when flag clicked
say [Hello! I am the Scratch Cat.] for (2) seconds
move (50) stepsThis script waits for you to click the green flag above the stage. Then the cat says hello for 2 seconds. Then it moves 50 small steps to the right. The red stop sign next to the flag stops everything.
Build the script above for the cat. Click the green flag twice. What happens?
Answer: the cat ends up 100 steps to the right of where it started. The script runs from the start every time you click the flag.
