The big idea
You get food from your plate. A plant makes its own food! To do this, a plant needs light, water and air. It also needs space to grow and a little goodness from the soil to stay healthy.
Let's explore
Each part of a plant has a job.
- Roots grow down into the soil. They soak up water. They also hold the plant tight so wind cannot pull it out.
- The stem is like a straw. It carries water up from the roots to the leaves. It also holds the plant up tall.
- Leaves are the food makers. They catch sunlight. They use light, water and a gas from the air to make sugar. That sugar is the plant's food.
